Muriel
Featured in baby name books
Muriel is an Irish name meaning “bright as the sea” or “sea-bright.” Muriel was popular in Britain from the 1870s to the 1930s but never caught on in the U.S.; the film Muriel’s Wedding may revive it. Notable bearers include novelist Muriel Spark and suffragette Muriel Matters, who chained herself to the grille in the House of Commons Ladies’ Gallery. Muriel is also glossed as “bitterness.”
