Orlando
Featured in baby name books
Orlando is the Italian (and Spanish) version of Roland, meaning “famous land” or “famous throughout the land.” The medieval Roland, Charlemagne’s companion, was celebrated as Orlando in the Italian epic Orlando Furioso, and Virginia Woolf wrote a novel called Orlando. Actor Orlando Bloom is a famous bearer, Shakespeare used it in As You Like It, and it is the Florida home of Walt Disney World. Other readings give it Germanic or English roots, meaning “old land” or “from the pointed land.”
