Phoebe is Greek for “bright,” “shining,” or “radiant,” and was a name of the moon goddess. Phoebe was fashionable early in the twentieth century, vanished in the 1960s, and returned in 1989, helped by Lisa Kudrow’s character on Friends. Phoebe served as a deacon of the Cenchreae church, and Paul commended her as a benefactor when writing his epistle to the Romans.
